As I mentioned earlier this month, I cashed in some GSN points for a ThermoKitty heated cat bed
and it could not have come at a better time, it has been very cold and our oldest cat’s arthritis has been bothering him lately.
- Soft, comfortable heated pet bed for indoor use
- Uses dual-thermostat unit to raise temperature 15 degrees above air temperature
- Removable cover washes easily
It certainly lives up to its promises, the zipped soft cover easily comes off and the cats love it, they all used it on the first day it was plugged in and it is so warm (I am tempted to use it to keep my feet warm) and Quincy could not be happier that it came in a large box which has become his new bed while Autumn has taken control of the bed. I guess now I have to buy a second (probably bigger size one) for the older cats to use.
Oh the things I do to these poor cats (actually they were very good about it and Quincy has been carrying around the stupid thing like it is his most prized possession)

I am sure I have bored you enough with Quincy’s contest, I was so happy when I kept him in the top 10 when the contest ended late Monday night, after a little confusion after the contest finished early and needed to be fixed and then disappointed as I read a tweet was sent saying they would announce the top 5 cats. Luckily, it meant they would narrow it down to 5 from the 10. So we waited eagerly through the 48 hours it was supposed to take to announce the finalists, with Global Pet Foods updating us daily that they were verifying the results to ensure all of the animals in the top 10 had properly qualified as there had been many reports of cheating.
Yesterday, as I was sitting on the GO train coming home from Toronto, the results were finally announced, and Quincy had moved up to 4th place from the 7th place he finished in. Needless to say I squealed out loud on the train and everyone thinks I am a nutcase and moved away from where I was sitting. Hey maybe that means they will move in the future and I will always get a seat on the train!
They are updating us on Monday on the next round of the contest, not sure how long it will take to get the results but we could be the proud owners of a new Honda Insight or get a year’s supply of free cat food so I am very very excited. Quincy, however, has made it very clear he doesn’t care about me winning a car, all he cares about is ripping my newspaper to pieces and running away from me so I don’t hug him again.
Cat toys, not bananas growing in space!
These are not exactly frugal, but since they have lasted a while and all of the cats actually play with them, they are a very worthwhile spend. An online friend had mentioned her cat’s obsession with his catnip banana. She sent me one but the package went missing at the border so I was surprised to see that they had them at my local Global Pet Foods (which I am starting to think of as Global instead of Ryan’s Pet Foods now!).
My cats prefer Cosmic Catnip, but nothing like they like this banana, which is filled with Cosmic Catnip. It was not long before I had to go back and buy another because they just can’t share it. Quincy more than the others, is just obsessed with it, he drags it into his little cave house, drags it onto the bed when he comes to sleep with us. Anywhere he goes the catnip banana follows. He lies on his back and bunny kicks it and has licked it so much that the fabric is starting to turn green from the catnip colour staining it. He is just so obsessed with it, I have never seen a cat love a toy so much, usually he one of those cats who play with it for 5 minutes them climbs into the shopping bag and plays on that instead.
Autumn, however, has given up on trying to play with hers, Quincy sees her playing and gets that OMG she has my banana *because they are now both his* and chases her, but she has found a new love for the Paw Breaker
Pawbreakers Plus, the Catnip Candy for Cats ® is an all natural, healthy, safe, and fun toy ball and treat rolled into one – a purrrfect combination. No artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives. Just a solid ball of top-quality catnip, specially combined with E.A.T.s own proprietary blend, and Diamond V feline nutritional supplement, to make a tasty toy that can be chased and eaten by your cat with almost no mess. 1 1/4” Diameter.
She can happily chase this little ball all day, just make sure you put it away at night, it hurts when you step on it, slip and smack your shoulder into a door frame!
Love, FallenPixels and the two catnipped out kitties!
Wow it has turned cold quickly, but I popped out for a break between getting Quincy more votes yesterday to check out Halloween candy sales, they are rather disappointing this year, the best deal I have seen so far is 50 fun size bags of M&Ms for $4 (it does have a Uncle Bens Express BOGO on it though).
I did get some decent non candy deals, large box of Cornflakes for $2.12 (I think we may have a cereal addiction) and boxes of 72 Red Rose teabags for $1.94, and a pork roast for $3.18 which we had for dinner last night.
As I walked downtown, I went past the source of the noise lately, and it appears to be a parking lot. I am still a little confused as to why there was no public notice up, it has kept everyone interested in what is going in there.
Still trying to find out what is going on with Quincy’s contest, according to the original rules, the top 10 cats and top 10 dogs would be asked to do a short description on why their fit the brand etc and then they would be judged. Now they are saying just the top 5 of each and Quincy finished 7th. If I had known of the change, I would have phoned people etc to remind them to vote. Someone said it may be just that they are naming their top 5 picks from each but we will just have to wait and see.
The Ultimate Name Dropping Contest I entered Quincy in closes today, and while he is so far finishing in the top 5, I will be so glad when it is over. When Matt suggested entering Quincy, I said sure, he would make a great mascot but like many contests, I enter them and do not give them much thought after a week or so. I dislike the contests where your daily votes count for wins, its all a popularity contest (or rather a spamming contest for many) and not judged on merit. I guess that part bothers me most, I sit there looking as the cats went ahead of Quincy thinking, would Global really use that name for their mascot?
I have made a lot of new friends while begging for votes, friends of friends that I may have met, or replied to the same status messages on Facebook and joked with but did not really know, who came together and really helped me get votes to keep Quincy up in the top 10 over the last ten days or so. However, I think that is probably the only positive thing (other than if Quincy wins obviously).
The things I learned:
The list goes on, but I think it is safe to say that I have no intentions on entering any contests that are not just the luck of the draw in the future, all of this vote getting is like a full time job!
By the way, you can still vote for Quincy today until midnight Eastern here

I woke up this morning to find Quincy had stayed in 6th place overnight, amazing since the last few days he has dropped from 7th to 9th and then worked his way back up during the day. Then just a few hours later, I checked as I grabbed his link to post and seen he was in 4th place!
Long cat seems to have come up quickly but the others in the top 12 have all been there the last week so we are all getting similar numbers of votes daily.
At the next level, we will be asked how our pet fits their brand so I guess I should start thinking about that. I have never placed this high in contests (unless simple win a coupon contests on blogs etc) so I am just so excited but getting all these votes has been a lot of work and I will be so happy when November 1st hits and it ends, regardless of whether Quincy actually wins.
GO QUINCY GO
and on a side note, while looking for a photo of him to post, I found the photo I took of him when he came into the shelter (I had to leave my baby in a cage until my shift on the desk was over) and look how skinny he was, his hips stuck out lots. My vet told me to feed him kitten food until we realised he had a sensitive tummy because he really needed the extra calories

Quincy - September 2009 (7 months old)
11:00 pm: hops onto your chest just after you get into bed and licks your face, give him some ear scritches and tell him to go to sleep, starts rubbing his head on you purring as loud as he can until chuck him off the bed
11:15 pm feet get attacked (those darn monsters under the cover)
11:30 pm climbs under duvet and starts licking your legs, pull him further up bed and snuggle him so he will settle
1:00 am wake up to growling, he is chasing his tail and growling at it (is he a dog or a cat)
3:00 am wake up to strange noise by front door, find dangerous weapon in bedroom (ummm a book lol) find cat dragging sneakers around by laces but stuck on recycling box. Put sneakers back on shoe rack and recycling box back by door for morning and bring cat back to bed
5:00 am wake up to growling, and an OMG he ate out of my bowl look from other cat who is also grumpy from lack of sleep
6:00 am – wooo people are up, why isn’t momma up time, cat jumps on your bladder constantly until you get up too
8:00 am – wonder what that weird noise is to find cat has taken the pop case from recycling and now has head stuck in it and is using it as a battering ram. Pull box off head of cat and put it back in recycling, get growled at and watch can try to pull box out again and realise he has to go butt first.
8:10 am – watch cat fall asleep in pop case and think (just for a second) about putting him out with recycling
Oh one of these days he will grow up and stop being such a bad kitten, really!
I used to do the rescues from Animal Control for a shelter, it is heart breaking having to choose, having to leave so many behind and knowing you can only help so many. What hurts most is that with our local animal control that has rescues ‘pulling’ from it – they don’t have an adoption centre so you know exactly what happens to those little ones left behind.
I have spoken to friends before about my experiences at Animal Control (and don’t get me wrong, the staff there do all they can with limited resources and limited rescue groups or shelters that have space to rescue from them) but not one of them really got it until one came with me one day. She cried that night and she didn’t sleep but she now volunteers for a rescue too.
Beth, from House of the Discarded, recently posted a video from her latest rescue. I don’t know how she does it every day, the occasional time I went was enough for me. But Beth’s video gives you a flavour of just how overwhelming it is there and why people need to take responsibility for their pets and spay and neuter them.
This just shows one of the rooms at Animal Control, there are many more, they are lined up in the hallways, out in the garage – you get the picture
Beth is always in need of foster homes in the GTA as well as adopters if you want to help!
