UGH – people on the GO Train

Usually, I quite enjoy the commute into Toronto, no one on my train is overly weird, talks to you or any of the other usual things that annoy people on other GO Trains.  Its too buy for saving seats etc that people write about in the free newspapers etc, but yesterday just made steam come out of my ears.

It was a very busy train, people standing by the time we got to Oakville – not at all unusual (GO Transit, if you are reading, put an extra morning train on the Lakeshore West Line!).  At Clarkson, a very pregnant woman got on the train (just after some guy almost pushed her off to get on in front of her).  I was sitting near the door and got up to let her sit down, and said jerk took the seat!  I mentioned to him that I had got up to give my seat to the woman and he said he paid just as much for his ticket and didn’t budge – and neither did the two guys who were sitting next to me!

Finally, one of the other men standing made a huge deal about insulting them and saying he hoped no one ever made their pregnant wives or elderly relatives stand and the guy who was sitting next to me got up (not the jerk who took the seat who was still mumbling on about paying as much for his ticket) so the woman could sit down – we were at the next train station by this time so this fiasco took over 5 minutes!

Have we lost all sense of respect and decency to let someone who needs a seat more than us sit down? UGH

To the jerk and the two who were already seated *yes including you, the one who finally got up when embarrassed by the person standing* – you should be ashamed of yourselves.

To the man standing, who asked people to give up a seat for her and told the jerks what he thought of them – thank you!

And to the older man at the other end of the train, who heard the comments and shouted down that he would give up his seat (he had two walking canes) – thank you but I don’t think she would have made it down the crush in the aisle since no one on the train is polite enough to move anyway!

Woo I opened photoshop LOL

As well as photography, I have neglected my photoshop skills lately, apart from an odd edit here and there and some simple banners, I don’t think I have really used photoshop since April when I did a project for work.

Last night, a thread on Smart Canucks was posted reminding people to post a link back to their site if you post your link on theirs (only fair).  I only have a text link so thought I would make a square button, but then another member asked if there were logos to use to link – so I made a few different sizes

and then, another member asked me to make her a signature using some images she chose

and some with lyrics on the pale bars at the top so she can switch around. Now I want to make more signatures!

A worthy vote

Yes, I know I am already asking you to vote for me in a photo contest, but this isn’t for me.

Another SmartCanucker, Sara, has entered the Vega Where Will Your Smoothie Take You? contest.  But this isn’t any old entry – Vega Smoothies helped this person through two years of chemotherapy, can you think of someone else who deserves to win?

Now she is in remission and would love to win this adventure trek, and in return, you have two chances to win prizes.  Just by voting you will be entered to win a $95 Vega Gift Pack but head over to Sara’s blog and you can enter to win a $100 gift card to the store of your choice.

Sara’s blog can be found here and her entry here – you can vote for her every day until August 15, 2010.

Help Sara win a trip to celebrate being in remission!

Vega shakes and smoothies gave me the nutrition and energy I needed to be able to get through two years of cancer treatments. Now I’m in remission and Vega keeps me strong while I’m training for my 26km walk for cancer, and gives me the energy to keep up with my three rescued rabbits!

My new signature

Life has been crazy busy lately and I have neglected photoshop (as well as photography, but it is a muggy and grey day out and doesn’t look the best for photos so photoshop it is…

A new signature for use on forums, inspired by some Sherlock Holmes love

FP-Holmes

I am in love with the movie, I could watch it every week, they chose the actors so well and I can’t wait for the sequel (although I am not sure about the rumoured Brad Bitt starring as Moriarty),  I love that they didn’t follow the usual Sherlock Holmes stories, the fighting scenes etc were so different than the ‘proper English gentleman’ role that is usually Holmes.

Living in a bubble

Living this far out in the ‘burbs leaves you with a strange bubble sense of living, having lived in London, I wouldn’t think anything of taking a bus and tube to the other side of London to go shopping – because that is in the city, right?  But here, the very thought of going to the next city (a whole 10-20 mins away depending on which of the three surrounding cities) is like OMG I have to go that far?

Even going to somewhere in the other corner of my own city, the city (not including greenbelt, because chances are, I am not going there) ends a max 11km from where I live and 7km north, so we are not talking far here – and its very rare that I would go that far since there is nothing really on either of the boundary roads.

I need to pierce that bubble a bit and visit some new places I think so I have stepped up to organising a SmartCanuck meetup for the local cities.   There are not enough of us in each city to really make it worthwhile so it will be a tri-city and surrounding area meetup.  Oh yeah and someone suggested meeting in my city since its the middle – funny how that works.  But for some of the others coming from surrounding areas, the other bigger cities may work better anyway

I have a problem

I guess I could have worse issues than a tea addiction, but I was back at herbal infusions today, I picked up Earl Grey Green (The all-natural bergamot oil with excellent Ceylon green tea creates a lively and sprightly Earl Grey), Peppermint Dream (Peppermint tea is made from both the leaves and the flowers. The addition of lavender brings a soothing quality to this delicious tea. As a hot tea it is cool and refreshing, as an iced tea the menthol content produces a pleasantly chilling taste sensation. Truly, a delightful cup!)  and White Chocolate Mousse (This tea is best described as sweet and creamy. The tea has an intoxicating, decadent finish that is out of this world!  Ingredients: Black tea, White chocolate shavings, Calendula petals, Elder blossom).

I have not tried the Earl Grey Green yet, but the Peppermint Dream has a great flavour and is not overpowering, and the White Chocolate Mousse really is decadent… AND someone else has been drinking as much tea as I have, he only had one cup of coffee today!

Go Transit sucks…

Let me start by saying that I completely understand that a freight train derailment is out of their control, but the way they handled the situation was ridiculous.

The freight train derailed between the 3rd (Burlington – my stop) station and 4th station on the Lakeshore Line, which I would guess is the busiest line during rush hour.  Somehow they still managed to run some trains that start from the first station (Hamilton), but the trains that start in Burlington (not all come in from Hamilton) were now starting at the 4th station and they were running shuttle buses to and from the 3rd and 4th stations.

I decided to wait for a slightly later train since so many people would be on the shuttles for the earlier trains, so I got to Burlington leaving plenty of time for the shuttle for the train that would leave the 4th station and we sat on the shuttle waiting for it to leave as the driver chatted to another GO transit worker.  Getting pushed for time, someone asked if we would make the next train and we were told that the bus supervisor had called ahead and the train would be waiting.

Eventually, the bus leaves, and pulls into the station just in time to see the train leave – the train we were promised would wait for us.  A GO employee and a police office at the station both shrug, saying yes the call was made to have the train to wait but…

So we wait for the next train – this one does wait for the bus that is also running late, leaving 7 minutes late, and getting us all into Toronto 30 mins later than we would have if we caught the first train, and almost an hour later than if the train had left our station on time.

And not one person apologised about the train leaving, but left us with a cheerful, have a good day

Herbal Infusions – ChocoMint Tea

herbalinfusionsI think I have finally found a way out of spending my whole lunch break running out to Teaopia for my tea stash, we were shopping in Mapleview Mall the other day, and in a rush to get home, I seen a little stand in the middle of the mall selling tea – but was very firmly told that we did not have time to stop since I would be there all night choosing a tea and the sign said blend your own tea – that could be too dangerous when we need to be somewhere in a hurry.

So today, when we were shopping, we had 10 mins to spare so popped into the mall, under very strict instructions to choose quickly (he knows me oh too well).  So I looked it up ahead of time, Herbal Infusions, a Canadian company, with too many teas to choose from, at least from their online store so I thought I would go with one of my favourites since we were short on time.

When I got there, I was delighted to see one of my favourites, Chocolate Mint, a tea that has been hard to find lately – $7.50 for 90g. I have already enjoyed several cups of it, after brewing up a pot to share but not sharing.  It has a strong but not overpowering mint flavouring with definite chocolate aftertaste, almost after 8 mint meets tea – a must try.  The coffee drinker in the house even enjoyed a cup (and good for him for trying a taste of Rooibos when we were at the mall too – although his reaction was interesting, he looked… strange).

They have a huge selection, as well as the blend your own and a few of their own special blends including a Mad Hatter tea for the release of Alice in Wonderland, Counting Sheep™ (including pure chamomile, jasmine and lavender – caffeine free of course),   Serenitea™ and Gimme a Boost Immunitea™ (including rosehip, echinacea root, blackberry leaves, peppermint, malva flowers, linden flower, oregano, orange peel, stevia leaf, rose petals).

teashotsThey opened in Mapleview in February, somehow, despite several visits to the mall, I had not seen them before now, although most of the stores I visit are upstairs so I rarely go downstairs where they are, I am very glad I did.  I wonder if I can get work to change to a decent tea?  Red Rose just doesn’t cut it LOL.  And as an added bonus, get a customer card for a buy 9 get the 10th free deal.

If you are not sure what you will like, they have some tea shots, a test-tube of tea, enough to make a pot, I did not notice them when I was there today but will be sure to try them out next time.

Oh and for the green in me, the bag and packaging are biodegradable – can’t ask for much more than that!

Check them out on facebook as well as their blog and website

Emergencies… only after 1pm please

Our building was bought by a new landlord last year, the old company left a lot to be desired – they were not slum lords or anything but there was a lot they could have done they chose not to. But they always dealt with emergency repairs quickly.

This morning as I was brushing my teeth, I feel water around my feet – there is a hole in the bottom of the U-pipe / plumbing trap / whatever you want to call that pipe under the sink. OK its not a complete emergency, I can just not use that sink and use the kitchen to wash my hands etc

But they have me fill out a maintenance form and tell me they hope they can come up after 1pm today, if not tomorrow – grrrrrrrrrr its more of an emergency than washing the floors in the lobbies which is what they are doing now

Clowns and 1000 Stirfry

GWclownA quiet night in tonight, Ghost Whisperer and Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution (while eating an ever so unhealthy dinner from the local Chinese food place).

For the first time ever, I did not want to watch Ghost Whisperer, the preview showed a clown, and he did not look too friendly. I have a healthy fear of clowns, I find something completely wrong with them. My sister had a clown at her 6th birthday who showed up to her party drunk and late. It turns out that Melinda also has a fear of clowns (this is the woman who speaks to ghosts all day, it reinforces my theory that clowns are just wrong).

It turns out he is not a clown but a PI who used  clown outfit to get into a house, but still I am proud of myself for watching in the first place, it looked like it was all about clowns from the preview.  A dire warning for Melinda though when he tells her that he is not responsible for the feeling of being watched, a comment she didnt really follow up with.

… and on to the Food Revolution.  This is more about the first week, I still cannot get over the fact they do not have enough cutlery for all students and feed them finger food so they do not have to use anything to eat with.  Did you see those kids with the cutlery, they had no idea, what do they eat with at home?  It cannot all be left up to schools to teach them.   Some thought tomatoes were potatoes and the highschool considers potato (in the form of fries) as a vegetable!

Good on Jamie teaching 1000 people how to cook a simple stirfry, I notice they used forks to eat it :)
