Frugal New Years Resolutions

There is a thread on SmartCanucks about people’s couponing resolutions.  For me these are less about starting on Jan 1st than just something I need time to organise that I won’t have the time to do until the Christmas break.

  1. A better organization system for my coupons as I have outgrown my current accordian file. Over the last few weeks I have tried a few systems and I think I have settled on a binder system but had to order the sleeves for the binder (I want a mixture of baseball card sheets for small coupons and money sleeves for larger ones as I do not like folding my coupons too many times as it can make them unreadable
  2. Track spending and savings, a member on SC has a great excel chart for each shop that I semi used this year but I need to include everything in it this year
  3. Make better use of loyalty programs, I have not spent much at Shoppers Drug Mart this year and yet redeemed for free stuff 3 times this year.  If I put a little more effort into it, I am sure I could save a lot in free shopping there
  4. Maximise on online shopping by using Great Canadian Rebates and/or searching for online coupons and deals before buying
  5. Keep better track of surveys I am doing and mail in rebates to ensure I get paid for them and do them before they expire as I often leave the forms sitting on my desk
  6. Keep track of the above monthly on here

Using my Kijiji Daily Deal GC at Chapters

I recently posted how I turned my $10 Bzzagent Zoompass Credit into $25 by using a Kijiji Daily Deal, well today I made my order and made it even more!

  • Book M wanted (Christmas Present) Reg $19.95 – sale $3.99 ($3.79 with iRewards)
  • Tea Tumbler with infuser $17.99
  • Cheap Eats Reg $12.95 – sale $4.99 ($4.74 with iRewards)
  • Book for me Reg $17.99 – sale $5.99 ($5.69 with iRewards)

Total $32.21 plus taxes (36.39) / Total before sales & discounts = $68.88 plus taxes $77.83

Minus $5 coupon = $31.39 inc taxes (free shipping over $25)

Minus $25 Kijiji Gift Certificate and $3.65 left in my account from a previous gift certificate order (GC from survey company so free) and I paid $2.74 out of pocket plus I used Great Canadian Rebates, at a rate of 3.5% cashback = $1.09 back leaving a final cost of $1.65

Cooking with leftovers

Beef Stew & Dumplings

Earlier this week, Laura from Tidbits From My Mind mentioned cooking chicken with dumplings and I have been craving dumplings ever since.  I had already put beef in the oven to roast  and so did not make it on Tuesday but was still thinking about it today so used up the leftover beef (which for $6 made dinner, M’s lunch yesterday and the stew today) for beef stew and dumplings.

I used the leftover beef, 2 carrots, one onion, a can of corn, 2 potatoes diced and used Laura’s dumpling recipe and some broth I picked up free with coupons last week.  It was delicious and very filling (now just to stay away from picking at the leftover dumpling).

Using the beef for three meals reminded me of a post by HillbillyHousewife where they have meal plans that include double cooking to have leftovers for specific meals in their meal plans, something I hope to do in the new year along with increasing my organisational skills

Burnbrae Egg Creations – Review

Eggs

From Flickr

I am not a huge egg eater, I mainly use them for baking but M can go through a pack of 12 eggs in one weekend.  While he does not worry about his weight, the fat and cholesterol in the amount of eggs he eats just can’t be good for you.  On top of that, he seems to find it impossible to rinse the egg shells and throw them in the garbage.  I am forever finding a sink full of eggshells.

As I mentioned in my post on the weekend, I got Braeburn Egg Creations for free at No Frills using coupons.

eggcreatEggs Creations Original is made from real egg whites and other ingredients to provide a full accompaniment of important vitamins and minerals. This product can be used not only on its own in making many of your favourite egg dishes but also in any of your cooking or baking recipes where whole egg is called for.

They also come in three other flavours, Cheese & Chives, Garden Vegetable or Southwest, but given that we rarely use those mixtures with eggs, I just got the original as it would be the most versatile.  I haven’t tried microwaving them, but their website says that they microwave fine for a scramble like egg dish.

We both had French Toast using them and M had scrambled eggs using them and while I could not tell the difference in the French Toast, he says he could in the scramble (it could be something to do with how wary he was of them to begin with, but she still said they tasted decent just not the same).  Since he easily eats 6 eggs at a time, I could not be happier that he will eat these given the non-existent levels of fat and cholesterol in them compared to real eggs (see chart below).   I will have to try baking with them, I am a little more wary of using them in a recipe that does call for whole eggs but in all, they are decent.

I have short hair!

cambel1Well as short as I have ever had my hair cut.  I brought in this picture and said ‘I want this’ and the stylist looked at my hair and told me to go have a coffee and come back and tell her I still wanted to cut it all off lol

One of the great things about cutting my hair so short after having really long hair is that I had enough of a ponytail, even with layers, to donate 9 inches of hair to a cancer charity that my stylist recommended (through Pantene, not Locks of Love – I didn’t even know there were more hair donation charities).

She cut it exactly how I wanted it but I had it straightened just because they always do an amazing job at straightening my hair compared to my hair but it was so bouncy and curly before she straightened it, I think I can actually wear it curly without spending hours curling it and I can really cut down my straightening time by having only 1/4 of the hair to straighten.  Coming into winter with early starts, I am sure I will appreciate cutting down on the hairstyling time.

No deals on halloween candy

Wow it has turned cold quickly, but I popped out for a break between getting Quincy more votes yesterday to check out Halloween candy sales, they are rather disappointing this year, the best deal I have seen so far is 50 fun size bags of M&Ms for $4 (it does have a Uncle Bens Express BOGO on it though).

I did get some decent non candy deals, large box of Cornflakes for $2.12 (I think we may have a cereal addiction) and boxes of 72 Red Rose teabags for $1.94, and a pork roast for $3.18 which we had for dinner last night.

As I walked downtown, I went past the source of the noise lately, and it appears to be a parking lot.  I am still a little confused as to why there was no public notice up, it has kept everyone interested in what is going in there.

Still trying to find out what is going on with Quincy’s contest, according to the original rules, the top 10 cats and top 10 dogs would be asked to do a short description on why their fit the brand etc and then they would be judged.  Now they are saying just the top 5 of each and Quincy finished 7th.  If I had known of the change, I would have phoned people etc to remind them to vote.  Someone said it may be just that they are naming their top 5 picks from each but we will just have to wait and see.

YAY GO QUINCY

I woke up this morning to find Quincy had stayed in 6th place overnight, amazing since the last few days he has dropped from 7th to 9th and then worked his way back up during the day.  Then just a few hours later, I checked as I grabbed his link to post and seen he was in 4th place!

Long cat seems to have come up quickly but the others in the top 12 have all been there the last week so we are all getting similar numbers of votes daily.

At the next level, we will be asked how our pet fits their brand so I guess I should start thinking about that.  I have never placed this high in contests (unless simple win a coupon contests on blogs etc) so I am just so excited but getting all these votes has been a lot of work and I will be so happy when November 1st hits and it ends, regardless of whether Quincy actually wins.

GO QUINCY GO

and on a side note, while looking for a photo of him to post, I found the photo I took of him when he came into the shelter (I had to leave my baby in a cage until my shift on the desk was over) and look how skinny he was, his hips stuck out lots.  My vet told me to feed him kitten food until we realised he had a sensitive tummy because he really needed the extra calories

Quincy - September 2009 (7 months old)

Vote, vote and free?

What a great way to start the week…

Today is Election Day, I am often working at a polling station or canvassing or helping people from retirement centres etc, but not this year so I get to sit back and just watch the election.

Quincy moved into 7th place in the contest he is in, thank you all so much for voting.  There is a week left and you can vote for him here

And I finally gave into the temptation to hoard my swagbucks.  Wind finally got back to me and for whatever reason, you can’t use shortform codes to sign up for twitter but they are working on it.  The signal in my office which is usually poor is great so I think I will be keeping it ($45 a month for unlimited calls in area and internet, although I may have to bump it up to a higher net plan at some point, I am watching my MBs carefully).   So my BF is using my old phone, he used to have a simple just for calls phone but has learned of the delights of having a camera, internet, games and music on a phone so I can’t just grab my microSD card out of there.

I was going to go to Best Buy and use the gift card I won from iCoke but I am too lazy to go over there so thought I would shell out some of my Amazon gift cards earned from Swagbucks and surveys and order there.  I only bought a 4gb since all the 8gb with free shipping were out of stock and I can just take my old 8gb one back and let him use the 4gb.  I am almost out of ink, so a cartridge for my printer too, and including tax, $41 and change and I did not pay one penny in actual cash.

Trying Wind Mobile

HuaweiThis weekend, Wind Mobile had a great deal, you can get a refurbished phone as low as $20 and their $45 a month unlimited plan for just $25 a month for the year.  We have talked about trying Wind for a while so it seemed like a great time to try it out, I was a bit worried about paying full price for the phone etc to find some of the reports were true and their service is awful.  So I got the $20 touchscreen Huawei U7519 knowing that I would upgrade it at cost if I chose to stay with them but minimising my losses should I decide not to stay.

The phone is actually quite good, a little slow and unresponsive at times and it does not have a qwerty keyboard but for an average user it would be fine (I am very frustrated by the non qwerty keyboard lol) and so far the service has been good, the coverage is fine where I live and the surrounding areas, although I haven’t ventured far since getting it.  The GPS on google maps won’t locate me though and so far, I have not been able to set up my twitter account on it (it worked 3rd time I tried on facebook but no luck with twitter).  But at $20 I didnt expect much from a phone so it is fine for what I paid, and if I stay, I will definitely be upgrading!

Free Perogies!

header_short_appsToday was a great day for freebies, we have treated ourselves out to dinner with the money we saved in July and August doing the challenges but I still love getting stuff for free!  My VIP SPC card has a deal for Swiss Chalet.  I didn’t plan that, I just seen the SPC card sign on the door and asked what the deal is for cardholders (many food places have a free upgrade in size but Swiss Chalet doesn’t have fry sizes etc).  I had a choice of a free soup, salad or cheese perogies – given my love of potato and cheese, it had to be the perogies.  They were perfectly fried crispy and not greasy, so a wonderful extra to our meal, they honestly look exactly like they do in this photo from their menu!

Shopping freebies: Vector Cereal, Special K Cereal and tub of Actvia Yogurt (using FPCs from back of Kellogg’s box), and 3/$5 Philadelphia Dips which my BF loves so he was happy to find a deal for him.

I also found the ‘crazy coupon lady’ who steals the coupons from books and magazines and puts them back, I am really surprised that stores haven’t done something about her yet but I made a lot of noise about her using an xacto knife to cut coupons from a booklet with recipes and someone from the store came over and told her to leave or they would have to call the police about her having a weapon in the store.  Maybe it taught her a lesson, but I doubt it, at least I found some coupons though!
