Coupon Ethics – a follow up

As I mentioned back in this post, while still couponing, I have not been as active on couponing networks.  Fed up of many having no ethics when it comes to clearing shelves, taking whole pads of coupons, editing printable coupons using photoshop after it expires to extend the date or terms, copying printed coupons etc I just don’t feel as comfortable saying I am a member of those networks.  Many times, they say that the actions have no repercussions, but recent coupons show they do:

  • Many coupons that never stated a size limit now do – coincidence that people are posting about buying trial sizes at Walmart to get overage? I doubt it.  Unfortunately, the size limits are often the biggest of that product and not even the ‘regular’ size we usually bought and often on sale.
  • Printable coupons now moving to use Websaver.ca – the most obvious being Right@Home by SC Johnson who without a doubt experienced the largest levels of fraudulent coupons when scanned copies of the Ziploc coupon appeared all over the internet.
  • Stores being even harder on couponers – I have always had fairly good staff at my local stores, however lately they are very hard on coupon use and seem to take forever reading them and check many with managers to ensure they are accepting correct ones.  understandable given the fact I know people are using fraudulent ones but it makes it so much more difficult on everyone else.

I realise that there are many great couponers out there and many are members of the same sites and networks as me, but I also know many of those people are also experiencing the same feelings as me when it comes to the networks.

It is sad that it is being ruined by a few, but such is life.

My Shoppers Drug Mart Redemption

I usually use my redemptions to buy stuff I want buy am not crazy enough to pay for, or to treat myself to new makeup/perfume but this time I decided they had some great grocery deals that I could stock up on as well as a few bits we needed.

  • Simply Food Burgers $6.99
  • Simply Food Chicken Strips $5.99 x 2 (they did not have Jane’s)
  • Simply Food Mixed Veggies $3.29 x3
  • Simply Food Fries $2.49 x 2
  • Classico Sauces $1.99 x 10
  • Tasters Choice Coffee $4.99 x 4 (minus 4 $2 coupons)
  • Baby Powder $4.99 – $1 coupon
  • Tetley Tea Bags $4.99
  • Gain Detergent $3.99 x 2 – $3
  • Hockey Magazine $15 (ouch! but it keeps him quiet)
  • Gillette Shave Foam $1 clearance x 2
  • Gillette Blades $18.99 (minus $5 wub3)
  • Etival Cleanser Kit $30
  • Frizz Ease Kit (Shampoo / Conditioner and Treatment) $10.59
  • Bath Retreat Foam $8.89
  • Bounce w/Febreeze $7.99 (I know but they are free)
  • Mrs Fields Cookies $1.99 x 2
  • Kraft Dinner 4/$5
  • Dempsters Bread 2/$3 – $1 wub2
  • Misc make up and bath puff to make up to $200

So for all of that, I redeemed $200, received Esso gift cards and spent under $20 in taxes and still have just under $30 left in points to spend!

It feels great to get the stuff I would be paying for free

Coupon Ethics

couponethicsgandhi

No blog for a while, I guess I needed to formulate this in my head before putting it in print.  I know there are many sites out there with articles and blog posts on ethical couponing, so it is not new and will probably never change.  Free is no longer good enough, people need to go further; make their own coupons, misuse regular ones in order to make extra money etc.

It is increasingly hard to coupon, even my favourite cashiers are saying that their managers are coming down on them because of the recent misuse of coupons.  I know much of this is to do with the increase in new couponers due to economic circumstances and the TLC show Extreme Couponing, but it feels like there is a new trend of free is no longer good enough.

Like many, I try to be ethical in my couponing, I don’t clear shelves, I read each coupon to ensure that I am using it correctly, but more than that, I try not to buy items I don’t need/want just because they are free.  Recently, Shoppers Drug Mart offered Advil Night Time at $3.99 plus 1000 bonus points and there was a coupon for $4 off any size.  10SDM counts points at regular value when they market them so 8000 points = $10 (compared to the 95k points = $170 or $200 on bonus weekend that we use to assign a value to points, because why waste value).  Even at the lowest redemption level, the points more than covered the tax on the item and you made extra in points value.   Did I take advantage of this? Yes, of course I did, we have about 15 advil caplets left in the bottle at home so we needed some soon anyway.  However, all over the internet, I see brags of people who bought 40+ packs of advil (and complained there were no more on the shelves when they went back for more!) and complaints from others who would have liked to grab a few packs to up their points total to get enough to redeem.  Not even that, but a sudden influx of people selling Advil Night Time on Kijiji / Ebay etc for $2+ a pack plus shipping from all the extras they bought.

If that was not enough to make my blood boil, there is now a need to misuse coupons as well as a coupon policy to make money on couponing.  Nivea offered a $2 off coupon, it specifies it is not valid on certain sizes, but they neglected to include a sample *not even trial, 15ml lotion* size on the coupon.  It can be found for about $1.  So people are printing out Walmart’s US coupon policy which allows change from coupons, and buying large amounts of it so they can get change back towards other purchases.   Most coupons state “We will reimburse you … provided you accept this coupon from your customer on purchase of the item(s) specified.  Any other application constitutes fraud.”  Since they are misusing the policy to begin with, it is fraud, but the manufacturers are giving you $3 off their item and if their item should be $2.47, they are giving you their item free, not $2.47 off their item and $0.53 towards your other purchases when the store policy specifically restricts it.

I wish people could use common sense when couponing, it would make life so much easier.  We already deal with rude cashiers who hate coupons and annoyed people behind us while our coupons are processed, why give these people fuel for their arguments?

  • Buy what you need, and only what can be used before it will expire.  Buying 100 tubes of toothpaste when you live alone just because it is free is not a deal – you are adding to the waste we leave behind on the planet and wasting money on taxes for items you wont use.
  • Don’t buy into the trend that free is no longer good enough or that you have to save $200 a week because others are.  I would rather save $20 on items I actually need than have a brag about 100 items I don’t need.
  • Do use common sense when making purchases with coupons, misusing them for your own gain just means that more and more restrictions will be placed on them or the manufacturer will not offer them at all.

Found the $3 Eversleek coupons!

Eversleek

Eversleek Coupon

I have mentioned several times how much I like L’oreal Everpure and the new Eversleek products so I was very happy to see that there was a $3 coupon to be used on any of their line this month, yet no one had found the coupon.  A fellow SmartCanucker mentioned finding them at a Rexall near where she worked and since I was in Toronto yesterday I went in search of this store and coupon.

I tried both stores that were recommended, the Shoppers Drug Mart was impressive but no coupons, the Rexall however was a jackpot hit.  I found the Eversleek coupon, the $4 off Advil Night Time (which is on sale for $3,99 this week at Shoppers Drug Mart so free with coupon), $2 off Selected Nivea products and $3 off Herbashine hair colours which are also on sale this week. Using these coupons alone, I am sure I can get my out of pocket cost for the spend $75 and get 18,500 points at Shoppers this week

New Coupon Organiser

Mega Large Coupon Organiser

Mega Large Coupon Organiser

In December I switched to a binder system for my coupons, but recently I have found it was getting very heavy and difficult to carry around.  Another SmartCanucker had bought a coupon organiser from glowgirl16 on Etsy and I was wary of it as they looked tiny and I have my huge binder.  Recently, we met in person and looking at all her coupons in it, I realised that it would hold all of mine too.   I used my paypal payment from Great Canadian Rebates so it was free and I choose a mega large and a regular one so I could keep some of my favourite coupons on me without dragging my whole organiser around.

The Mega one holds 1000 coupons and all of the coupons from my binder fit in it without a problem, it has a 15 inch handle to carry it and attaches (opened) to the shopping cart so you can just pull coupons from it as you shop.  It is 4 inches deep across the bottom, 6 inches high and 8 inches wide so I have not had to fold any coupons to fit in it which is great.

Regular Size

Regular Size

The smaller one I bought to keep with me at all times is much bigger than I expected, I thought of it more like a purse but it is 2 inches deep and has 20 dividers so its quite substantial.  I don’t have anywhere near the 400-500 coupons it holds in it so it is not too heavy to keep with me.  Like the mega one, it folds over the shopping cart so you can easily pull coupons out as you shop.

For those with even more coupons than me, she has even bigger sizes with one that is 6 inches deep and a massive double-wide one that is two of the 6 inch ones so you can take every single coupon in existence with you shopping and never miss out on a deal.

How do you carry your coupons?

Terrible customer service at Shoppers Drug Mart

Shoppers Drug Mart have a great promo on today, if you spend $50 you get the choice of 10x points or a $20 gift certificate.  Their gift certificates are usually very short on the expiry date as they are not an actual gift card so of course I wanted the points (plus you get points for spending $50 before coupons, the GC is up to the cashier so they need to see the $50 to give it to you).

I had all my coupons ready, knew what I was buying, they had put a limit on one of the items so the revised list would come to $60ish before taxes and I would leave with 12,000 points and use $35 in coupons.  I have done this many times, I KNOW the register gives the 20x points even when you use regular coupons which are legally treated as cash.

The cashier argued with me saying I was better off not using coupons and getting the gift card.  Well what if I was not there for 20x points, what if it was just stuff I needed and that was all the money I had to pay with?  Why would I pay more now to get $20 off useless crap next week?  She argued this with me several times, it was embarrassing!  Then she did not scan my card when given it, she just gave it back to me at the end of the transaction.  Good thing I checked my receipt before leaving.  So I said this to her and she says that the points will all be taken off later anyway and she wants to cash through the other customers first so I refused to move until she did it.

I got my points but SDM Head Office and I are having a nice chat on Monday when the supervisor is back in

$40 Groceries for Under $1

cheap-groceries

We went to Fortinos last night for most of our ‘real’ groceries since they had great deals on chicken and spent about $25 (plus $3.47 at No Frills for 20lbs potatoes)

  • Quinoa 378g for $2.58 (750g at Sobeys last week was $10.99)
  • Chicken drumsticks (10) $3.78
  • Chicken Thighs (4) x 2 at $2.12 and $2.13
  • Beef stir fry strips $3.02
  • Mushrooms $3.18
  • Broccoli $1.49
  • Peppers $3.22
  • Green Beans $1.17
  • Eggs x 2 $1.69 – $2 WUB2 = $0.69 each
  • Wonder Simply Free Bread $1.99 – $0.75 = $1.24

At Walmart (Thursday night when we can take advantage of the two weeks’ pricing), we got

  • Lucky Charms (family size) $4 (his treat for the week)
  • 4 x Nature Valley (PMed to Food Basics) $1 – $0.99 = $0.01 each
  • 2 x ziplock bags $2 each – $4 WUB2 = FREE

Then today we went to Sobeys to get just milk and Aylmers tomatoes (haha I know).  When we got there, a rep from the Spectator (a local paper) was there and I stopped to ask her about our free trial which has ended but I have not received a subscription notice.  She actually had a better deal than the original one they quoted me plus gave me a $25 certificate towards my groceries.  So we stocked up on some junk food.  Usually I would be pretty unhappy about spending $25.95 (after coupons and clearance discounts) for 12 items (pictured) but admittedly, olive oil is expensive and we were not all that fussy since we were not really paying for it. The milk also had lots of coupons on the back including $5 off when you buy 2 bottles of Sunlight laundry detergent which are on sale for $4.77 this week.

It will be nice to get the local paper again, it always has the inserts with coupons on Thursday instead of Saturday!

I have just started using Multibionta after being lucky enough to receive a $10 coupon in my flyer inserts, it was on sale for $12.99 at Shoppers and since I needed vitamins anyway, so I bought it.  But yesterday I was invited to a bzzagent campaign for it where they are sending me more coupons to try out Multibionta’s 30 day challenge.
