Hooray for freebies!

A fellow SmartCanuck’er mentioned last night that Maybelline’s new mascara, Falsies, was on sale at Shoppers Drug Mart for $3.99 this week. So I went to the mall this afternoon to grab one while they were still on sale. Obviously Shoppers Drug Mart was a little ahead of itself as the price was already $9.99. I was about to say something when the cashier said, you get this for free because it is scanning wrong.

The Scanning Code of Practice is only at certain stores and has some exceptions, but basically, if an item scans above the price it is advertised at (either in a flyer / poster or on the shelf unless a correction is posted)  you get that item free or $10 off if it costs above $10.  That is only for the first of those items, subsequent ones are offered at the correct lower price.

A worthy vote

Yes, I know I am already asking you to vote for me in a photo contest, but this isn’t for me.

Another SmartCanucker, Sara, has entered the Vega Where Will Your Smoothie Take You? contest.  But this isn’t any old entry – Vega Smoothies helped this person through two years of chemotherapy, can you think of someone else who deserves to win?

Now she is in remission and would love to win this adventure trek, and in return, you have two chances to win prizes.  Just by voting you will be entered to win a $95 Vega Gift Pack but head over to Sara’s blog and you can enter to win a $100 gift card to the store of your choice.

Sara’s blog can be found here and her entry here – you can vote for her every day until August 15, 2010.

Help Sara win a trip to celebrate being in remission!

Vega shakes and smoothies gave me the nutrition and energy I needed to be able to get through two years of cancer treatments. Now I’m in remission and Vega keeps me strong while I’m training for my 26km walk for cancer, and gives me the energy to keep up with my three rescued rabbits!

Yummy Soups

I finally went to the post office and picked up my packages myself since someone told me they would do it Friday and I still don’t have them ;)

knorrfull6I have my new business cards from vistaprint to use for SmartCanucks and people I see shopping with coupons.

The post office is next door to No Frills so I went in to check out the sales, oooh Knorr boxed soups $1 each and I had coupons.  4x $1 soup – 2 $1 WUB2 Knorr products = 50c each!!  I love these soups, I got the Rustic Potato, Red Pepper & Tomato, Broccoli & Boursin and Creamy Mushroom – yummy.

Living in a bubble

Living this far out in the ‘burbs leaves you with a strange bubble sense of living, having lived in London, I wouldn’t think anything of taking a bus and tube to the other side of London to go shopping – because that is in the city, right?  But here, the very thought of going to the next city (a whole 10-20 mins away depending on which of the three surrounding cities) is like OMG I have to go that far?

Even going to somewhere in the other corner of my own city, the city (not including greenbelt, because chances are, I am not going there) ends a max 11km from where I live and 7km north, so we are not talking far here – and its very rare that I would go that far since there is nothing really on either of the boundary roads.

I need to pierce that bubble a bit and visit some new places I think so I have stepped up to organising a SmartCanuck meetup for the local cities.   There are not enough of us in each city to really make it worthwhile so it will be a tri-city and surrounding area meetup.  Oh yeah and someone suggested meeting in my city since its the middle – funny how that works.  But for some of the others coming from surrounding areas, the other bigger cities may work better anyway

More on SmartCanuck Ladies

It is amazing how much of a community SmartCanucks is, and how welcome they make you feel as a newbie (or returning newbie in my case).  They are all so helpful and share how to get great deals.

On my return to SmartCanucks, I ran into a small issue that I needed a mod to help me sort out (which she was happy to help me with) and she offered me ‘some coupons to start off with’.   Well some does not describe how generous this person was, she literally gave me a coupon for everything.

You know who you are if you are reading, thank you so so much for this amazing Random Act of Kindness (which seem to happen a lot on Smart Canucks – as I mentioned, a great community of likeminded people)

Meeting the SmartCanucks

Tonight, I had the pleasure of meeting several of the SmartCanucks who live/work in Toronto for a coupon swap & chat.  We talked about where to use which coupons for the best deals and if products we had not personally tried had been used by other members.

Attending were Mothu, Bug, Spice_43, Kittyc, save-girl, Andit, sunraven, peacestar, cjordan, screamy and coolgirl (I really hope I am not missing anyone, and if I am, sorry ladies!).  Also sneaking in was Quincy, who belongs to Andit – a very well behaved kitty who just sat there enjoying some ear scritches and probably wondering why he was dragged out of his house to meet all these loud women in some strange place.

Mothu, Bug and I were all newbies and a little overwhelmed by the coupon queens among the group but they gave us some great tips on where to find coupons and how to use them as well as sharing some of their coupons with us to get us off on the right path.

They meet on a regular basis (although I don’t think my new buddy Quincy (I think of him as Quincy2 so as not to confuse him with my little brat Quincy) usually attends) so if you sign up to SmartCanucks, bite the bullet and look for a meet in your area.  It is a little overwhelming as I mentioned, but well worth learning from the experts.
